History of the Tunnels
Constructed from 1965 to 1967, the Vinh Moc Tunnels were built to shelter residents from the intense bombings by the U.S. Air Force. The tunnel system spans over 2 kilometers in length and consists of three levels situated 12 to 23 meters underground. It served not only as a refuge but also as a living, production, and combat area for more than 60 families.
Remarkably, during the war years, 17 babies were born in the tunnels, symbolizing the resilience and vitality of the people of Vinh Linh.
Structure and Features
The tunnel system is intelligently designed with:
- 13 Entrances: 6 doors are facing the sea and 7 doors towards the hills, which facilitate ventilation and quick exits.
- Fully Functional Areas: These include accommodation, water wells, infirmaries, meeting houses, food storage, and fighting bunkers.
- Comfortable Environment: The scientific design ensures a cool and airy space, allowing residents to live underground for extended periods.

Historical Significance
The Vinh Moc Tunnels serve as a vivid testament to the indomitable will, creativity, and solidarity of the Northern people during the war. They played a crucial role in protecting the strategic Ho Chi Minh supply route by sea, significantly contributing to the nation's victory.
