Dark Cave - An unforgettable mix of adventure and nature

I. Overview of the Dark Cave Experience

The Dark Cave, locally known as Hang Tối, is one of the most popular adventure tours in Phong Nha. It’s called the "Dark Cave" because there’s no lighting inside — only what you bring in with your headlamp. The cave is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its spectacular limestone formations and vast cave systems.

II. Typical Tour Highlights

  1. Ziplining

    • You begin the tour by ziplining over the Chay River — it’s one of the longest zip lines in Vietnam (~400 meters).

    • This is both scenic and exhilarating, and it's a fun way to get your heart pumping before you even enter the cave.

  2. Swimming Across the River

    • After the zipline, you’ll swim a short distance to the cave entrance (life jackets are provided and mandatory).

  3. Exploring the Cave

    • With a helmet and headlamp, you walk into the pitch-black interior of the cave.

    • Inside, you’ll trek over rocky terrain, through narrow passages, and see fascinating stalactites and stalagmites.

  4. Mud Bath

    • A unique highlight! Deeper inside, there’s a natural mud pool. It’s buoyant and therapeutic, and you’ll float in it while laughing with fellow travelers.

    • It’s messy, slippery, and a lot of fun.

  5. Kayaking & Water Activities

    • After exiting the cave, you'll kayak back across the Chay River.

    • Some tours also include water obstacle courses and zip lines that drop you into the water.

III. Tips for Visitors

  • What to Wear: Swimwear, Bikini 2 piece for women. The mud will ruin anything fancy.

  • Footwear: Water shoes or bare foot when exploring inside Dark Cave

  • Bring a Change of Clothes: You'll get muddy and wet, so dry clothes for after the tour are a must.

  • Storage: Lockers are provided for your belongings.

  • Fitness Level: Moderate – you need to be able to swim a bit with life jacket.

IV. Things to Keep in Mind

  • Not suitable for small children or people with limited mobility.

  • You’ll get dirty — but that’s part of the fun.

  • Best to go with a guide — and usually, visits are only permitted through organized tours.
