Commander Cave is a historical and cultural tourist site, officially recognized as a Special National Site. The site now serves as a “history classroom in the middle of the forest,” allowing visitors to connect with the past through artifacts, immersive virtual reality experiences, and the stories still etched into the cave walls.
Phong Nha Cave is not only a natural legacy of the world. It also stands as a relic system of the historic Ho Chi Minh trail which, during the US war, served as a secret hiding place for floating bridges that were only brought out at night to avoid targeted bombings. These bridges were key components in the supply chain from the north to the south by allowing supply trucks to cross the rivers. It also once served as a hospital, with weapons installed at the entrance. Once its location was discovered, it was heavily bombed, resulting in the external scarring you see today. This area has now become the first section of the ever-popular Ho Chi Minh trail, as it showcases a lush, mountainous landscape.
07:30 – 08:00: Our guide and driver will pick up guests at your hotel in Dong Hoi and transfer you to the Phong Nha area I OR 08:30 - 09:00 in Phong Nha area
09:00 - 12:00: Begin the journey to Commander Cave - the command base of Supply Depot 14, belonging to the 559th Army Corps. During the years of resistance, this place was converted into a logistics warehouse, shelter, meeting place, and coordination point for transport operations across the Truong Son Mountains.
One of the most remarkable highlights at the Command Cave is the “time-travel” journey powered by 9D virtual reality technology. Seated in the legendary three-axle ZIL-130 military truck, a vehicle that once accompanied countless supply convoys along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, visitors put on VR goggles and enter a vivid recreation of the fierce wartime years. The truck jolts and sways with each treacherous turn, while the air fills with the rumble of the engine, the thunder of bombs, the blare of urgent radio broadcasts, and the rallying shouts of comrades-in-arms.
12:00 - 13:15: Lunch at a local restaurant in Phong Nha village. Here you will enjoy a traditional Vietnamese dish. Vegetarian option available. Please contact us in advance if you have any dietary restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate you.
13:15 - 16:00: Visit Phong Nha Cave. Relax on a traditional wooden boat as you cruise along the poetic Son River for about 25 minutes. The boat will then take you deeper into the cave, where you can admire the spectacular stalactites and stalagmites formed naturally over millions of years.
16:00 - 17:30: Transfer back to your hotel in Phong Nha or Dong Hoi. End of the tour.
